Interesting choice...

10/9/06 UPDATE:

Looks like the Daily Record isn't too happy about Garrett's cherry picking, either:
...

Rep. Scott Garrett, like most candidates, knows the importance of selective reading. A few months ago, a Daily Record editorial criticized Garrett for opposing a measure to ban price gouging by oil companies. It noted that Garrett, who faces a spirited challenge in the 5th Congressional District from Democrat Paul Aronsohn, thinks government should do as little as possible. It said, for example, that Garrett has opposed a President Bush-backed plan to extend unemployment benefits and federal money for Katrina relief.

But one line in the editorial praised Garrett for being "one of those rare politicians who seems to put his principles over political expediency."

What line do you think the Garrett campaign picked up and used on a mailer to district voters? You got it, the one about putting principle first. This is like an advertisement for a movie that cherry-picks one line from a lousy review for marketing purposes.

A spokeswoman for the Garrett campaign noted that the candidate simply picked up a line that had appeared in print.

As I mentioned in a comment earlier, I received a snazzy mailer from "independent" Congressman Scott Garrett. (Someone must have screwed up, since the mailer failed to mention that Mr. Garrett is a Republican.) The cover of the piece, entitled "An independent voice, getting results", shows a quote from the May 9, 2006 Daily Record:

"Scott Garrett is one of those rare politicians who seems to put his principles over political expediency."

An impressive endorsement for an "independent" politician, huh? Well, I decided to take a look at the whole article, just to confirm how wonderful Mr. Garrett is. Here are some other quotes from the piece that Mr. Garrett could have used:
Garrett, R-Wantage, last week was one of 34 House members and the only one from New Jersey to vote no on a bill to make gas-price gouging a crime.

or...
Garrett firmly believes in a government that should do as little as possible.

or...
Recall that one of his first votes in Congress was opposing a plan by President Bush to extend unemployment benefits for those in need.

or...
He also has opposed money for Katrina relief.

or...
Devotion to principle is important, but there are times when concessions should be made to what's best for the public.

Seems to me that Mr. Garrett should be writing movie posters- "This movie is the greatest..." example of crappy filmmaking I've ever seen!- not representing the good people of New Jersey's 5th district.

Contribute. Volunteer. Support Paul Aronsohn.

I do not care what you say about Scott Garrett, he will be elected decisively by the 5th democrat. I do not even know what the loser who is running against him even stands for. I am tired of liberal New Jersey and of fools like you electing democrats. Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez are two of the most corrupt individuals in the Senate. Also, I will not stand for Nancy Pelosi and Charles Rangel, two liberal clowns who have gained power through being in an easy district, to run the house of representatives. I will laugh my head off when Garrett is reelected despite your pathetic efforts.

Hey anonymous, if you want to know what Paul Aronsohn stands for, GO TO HIS WEBSITE.

Of course you don't want to, if all you can do to support Garrett is to repeat what you've heard of from Rush Limpballs and Sean Hannity (scary Pelosi! corrupt New Jersey) you'll never see the world the way we do here in the reality based community.

You call this a reality based community. I wish the fifth district as well as other republican districts could form their own state and leave out Hudson, Essex, Union, Camden, and other democrat counties. How does a corrupt political boss like Menendez become senator of this state. The newspapers are all in his favor based on the headlines. The Bergen Record says that Menendez votes with conservative Republicans and then goes on to say how he votes the democrat party line 91 percent of the time. 91 percent shows he not cross party lines. In terms of Garrett, I want someone to oppose the liberal democrats in office. Garrett is more conservative than I am, but I will not vote for a democrat like Arohnson because every northeast democrat is the same in their liberal viewpoints. I want less government and less taxes and Garrett provides me with both. Economic freedom is very important to me and raising the capital gains and dividends tax is a non-starter in my eyes. Mark my words, Garrett will be reelected.

well, anon, if you think garrett has represented you effectively, then good luck.

my guess is that, when given garrett's actual record, most nj5 residents would disagree with you. as a matter of fact, they'd probably be pretty ashamed to be represented by him.

good luck with those taxes. thank god this isn't the tax crazy 90's, huh?

I guess the smart liberal people are for ever increasing taxes, more government, and providing me with even less chance to reach my financial goals. Lautenberg, Menendez, and Corzine are all wealthy. How about giving me a shot at that American dream too? I am tired of paying double the property taxes of the rest of the nation, one of the highest sales taxes, the highest auto insurance rates, etc. You call this quality of living?

you know what's funny? the fact that you think republicans will give you a better shot at the american dream. they don't give a crap about you.

by the way, it's too bad that Kean Jr. is such a poor man. a real rags to riches story. bush, too. oh, and cheney. and...

Does Ted Kennedy or Hiliary Clinton want me to reach the American dream? Ted Kennedy has a blind trust fund and probably does not pay his fair share of taxes, but insists that everyone else do so. I have benefited from saving and investing. I do not have a 401k or pension plan and most of my money goes into a taxable account. Reducing capital gains and dividends taxes encourages people to invest. The democrats keep bashing companies, when I benefit from their success. I do not understand what the democrat party has against people taking responsibility for their lives and encouraging people to invest. By the way, I am not rich the way democrats like Kennedy, Herb Kohl, and Jay Rockerfeller, and others are. I just wish that I had a nice trust fund like they do.

Scott Garrett won't be reelected because because liberal democrats are awful and NJ has really bad property taxes? I don't see what either of the candidates in this race have to do with Nancy Pelosi and Charles Rangel, but I'm pretty sure a look at Garrett's voting record will convince voters in this fairly sane district that they don't really want to vote for him. A little publicity should move Aronsohn way up in polls.

Scott Garrett is one of the only people in Congress to those spending programs you democrats love so much. Spending must be reduced immediately.

Scott Garrett is one of the only people in congress to say no to the spending programs you democrats love so much. Why doesn't Corzine cut some of the social programs in New Jersey? I can no longer afford to pay the taxes in this state for the low quality of living.
